I met with Alexis virtually between grooming appointments, and the time flew by. She is incredibly smart, well-read, and passionate about animals. I even joked with her (or was I serious?) that, despite living in North Carolina, I might just figure out how to bring my Maltipoo to New Jersey every six weeks for grooming. Her enthusiasm and dedication were truly inspiring.

Name: Alexis

Occupation: Pet Groomer, and Entrepreneur, Owner of Auntie Lexie’s Pet Grooming (Willingboro, New Jersey)

Background: Alexis initially dreamed of becoming a veterinarian but discovered her true passion in grooming after exploring various careers, including teaching environmental science to communities as a watershed ambassador with the Environmental Protection Agency. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced her corporate grooming salon to close, she took a leap of faith and launched her own business, which she now runs successfully.

How She Started Learning Her Craft: Alexis began learning grooming in high school at Burlington County Institute of Technology. Over time, she honed her skills through mentorship, on-the-job experience, self-directed learning (via online courses, YouTube, and instructional books), and attending industry conventions.

What She Loves About Her Job: “When dogs come in nervous but leave happy, it’s incredibly rewarding. I also love the creative side—transforming a scruffy dog into a beautifully groomed one. Before-and-after moments are my favorite,” Alexis shared. She also enjoys educating pet owners about proper care.

Biggest Challenge: Running her own business has required Alexis to master taxes and bookkeeping, skills she continues to develop.

Advice to Other Black Women Who Want to Do What She Does:

  • Start as a bather (Many places will hire you without experience)

  • Finding mentors to guide the journey

  • Research and never stop learning

  • Continue to learn and get better at your craft via conventions, online courses, self-directed training like YouTube and instructional books

Future Goals: Alexis envisions transitioning to teaching and mentoring other groomers while managing her salon.

Fun Fact: Alexis has a very short commute. She lives above her salon.
